Red Lake River Ice - 2017

in News
17. 02. 22

The City of Theif River Falls announced, today, that due to high volume of water caused by early snow melt the condition of the ice on the Red Lake River upstream from the dam in Thief River Falls is rapidly deterioating.

Thief River Falls Electric Superintendent Dale Narlock stated that for the safety of the dam and to prevent flooding for upstream land-owners, the dam spillways are in full operation. "We must keep all the spillways operating to control the rise of the river. High Landing is at flood stage now. Red Lake has reduced its output at the dam to assist with concerns requarding ice jams on the river. However, the unusual, early warming has created strong flows, undermining the ice sheet, " stated Narlock. "Ice is never 'safe', but right now, we recomend no travel on the ice." Narlock stated that ice houses should be removed imediately and extreme caution should be observed while doing so.
